Message in the madness

At this time of year I can’t help but think how blessed I am to be a stay at home dad. The weather is getting better, the days are starting to feel longer, and March Madness is here. It’s that last bit that I most thankful for. Since I am a stay at home dad I can watch almost three times as many games as I could if I was working. On the West Coast here the games start at 9:00 AM, that means instead of the morning Sesame Street time we can watch Basketball! While I am fired up for this temporary good fortune the boys need some convincing. They seem to love their Sesame Street time more then I anticipated what with it being their only TV time. To get them on team “Madness” I have come up with a way to get them excited and to teach them a valuable lesson about sports and gambling. I mean come on these boys are 3 and 2 year olds so it’s about time they learned how to put some action on the game. We all know that you can’t properly appreciate a basketball game until you got a little coin riding on the game. I have started telling the boys about the teams in the dance, going over the lines and where the games are being played. I let the boys choose the teams they want in each of the match ups and we have decided on the terms. If they win they get candy, if they lose then they have to use their tiny hands and ability to climb to get up into the chimney and clean it out after a cold winter with a bunch of fires. It may seem like these terms aren’t fair but you have no idea how much they love candy. So they will be giving up a couple Sesame Streets a week for the tournament but they will gain some valuable lessons on the uniting power of sports. And if they don’t pay up they may learn some other lessons as well.

  1. YES! The quality of life of a stay at home dad goes through the roof for 1) March Mardness 2) Wimbeldon 3) British Open and 4) day baseball. Real sports + daytime = awesome.

My oldest began filling out her bracket last night based on team colors and mascots. I get a punch in the arm from the Mrs. when I bring up betting lines, but she knows that Daddy is sometimes cheering extra hard for lots of points to be scored or for strange teams she’s never heard of before – “C’mon UC Santa Barbara, keep in close!”

  2. Ahhhh Yeah! Love this time of year. In fact aside from the games, this is one event that my dad and I have shared since I was in High School. We both fill out our brackets and then the real competition begins. He get’s so crazy about the tourney that last year he moved his knee surgery scheduled in Fall of the previous year to March so he could recoup during the tournament and not miss a game because of work. He’s crazy like that.

I’m praying for a miracle for my alma mater Longhorns.
