Christmas Traditions Old and New

For the past week we have had Beautiful’s parents here loving and spoiling the boys the way Grandparents are want to do. The holiday season started early with new bikes for the boys and spiffy clothes for all of us and after a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner we all went in search of a tree. There are twenty six days till Christmas but we are in full holiday mode here and it has me thinking about traditions. There are two big things we will be doing leading up and counting down to Christmas morning:

  1. Advent Calendar and story – Instead of the story of consumerism that has dominated the Christmas narrative we want to get back to the miraculous, mysterious incarnation that is at the center of our faith. Following the story from an advent family guide and an advent calendar that we can open day by day to count down.
  2. The Cinnamon Bear Radio Show – There are 26 episodes of this magical story of Jimmy and Judy as they search for the missing Silver Star for the top of the tree. The episodes are around 15 minutes long and we will be listening to them each night before bed. There is a local station in Portland that plays an episode a day starting Today but you can also download them here and play them when you like.

Each of these traditions count down day by day and require the family time to be present and together. Of course that is what makes traditions so great, the time spent together and the magic of the story. What are the holiday traditions you will be enjoying with your families this year?

My wife’s German mother brings Advent calendars from the small town of Quackenbruck, which seems to make the season more authentic somehow. Very beautiful tree!
