As a fantastic Christmas gift Beautiful’s sisters got the boys tickets to see Zoo Zoo at the fantastic Imago Theatre. Zoo Zoo is a Mask theatre combining a number of the great characters developed by the Imago Theatre in Portland. The show had a national tour and played at the New Victory Theatre on Broadway in New York. Frogs, polar bears, penguins, and anteaters entertained in short sketches that had the boys wide eyed and laughing for most of the show.
We talked about going to see the show all week leading up and when we got to the venue Primo wanted to know if it was a movie. Trying to explain that it was a live show, like watching Mr. Ben play music in person. “Are they in a TV?” No they are right there buddy. “Will they come out and get us?” No I don’t think they will come out and get us, let’s watch and see. As the show started all the kids in the audience were giving a play by play of the action on the stage. I’m sure there were people there annoyed by that but it made the show for me. Listening to all the kids talk in their much too loud voices asking what each animal was and yelling instructions to them added to show.
Segundo got a scared when the Anteater came out to the audience but Primo loved it. Once the crowd started laughing and he realized he was being silly and not scary Segundo came around. There was a lot of fun audience interaction and the creativity of the movement and characters was amazing. All four of us loved this show and I was so excited for the kids to get to see their first live theatre. If you live in Portland you should go see this show while it’s still at here. The show runs until January 2 and it’s an amazing innovative experience for the whole family. Thank you Meg and Mandy for a great gift, we all loved it.
