Even in beautiful Portland where a mountain hike and stream crossing is never far away you see signs that you might be raising an urban kid. While riding home from school last week, Primo stopped after we crossed the train cut and pointed up to the billboard. “Daddy I think it’s spring now, because the snowy mountain isn’t on the billboard anymore, flowers are.” When you are judging seasons by the advertisements around the city it might be time to head out into the country. Lucky for us his grandparents have a beautiful house on the river with some outbuildings and streams to explore.
We also picked up my brother from the airport for his weekend of work providing electricity to those outbuildings. While at my parents house we walked down the trail to the stream and threw rocks into the rushing water, started a fort out of fallen branches and ferns, and splashed through mud and puddles with our pants tucked into rain boots. We found a little danger in our adventure and it was great for all of us. Primo even got to shoot his first BB gun with Papa, hitting a can across the way. It was great weekend of fresh salmon my uncle caught earlier that week, grandma’s home made tortillas, and lots of sports and HGTV on the fancy HD TV with full cable package. We all left feeling refreshed, full, and loved. What more could you want from grandma’s house in the country.
