We woke up this morning to a rare sight in the North West: Blue skies and sun coming through the window. I saw it coming on the weather widget for the last week but waking up to cascading light with rays of highlighted dust angling down was still shocking. We have had a wet and cold winter here that was awful even by our low standards. So when we saw the sun today we pulled cargo shorts over pasty white legs, wore shoes with no socks, and bundled up with sweaters and jackets to take a walk. It is still chilly enough to warrant pants and socks but we are too excited for common sense.
The boys and I walked through the neighborhood seeing people on porches we never knew lived here. The sun was bringing us all out of a long hibernation. We looked for all the flowers and bright colors of Spring that had been there in yersterday’s grey but reached out to us in the morning sun. We collected treasures: an old tennis ball, a smashed transformer, pine cones, and a shopping list for smokes and cheese wiz. At the coffee shop we ran into people we know and commented on how we all needed this sunny day. Spring sun is appreciated more easily for the long winters we’ve all come out of.
Back at home we opened all the windows in the house to let out the winter must. The breeze was still cool but the house needs an airing out after months of floor heaters and slumber. We brought out the porch chairs and played cars in the sun, getting reacquainted with summer’s games. The rain and cold will be back soon but today we took advantage of our reprieve. Gorging ourselves on Vitamin D and counting down the days to summer.
