A pile of dirt is a blank canvas

Everyone has the story of the first gift you get your baby and they love the wrapping paper more than the gift. Or the hours of entertainment kids have from the cardboard box while the shiny new item from that box is ignored. The simple things always make the best toys because they are a blank canvas for our imaginations to draw our own adventures. As the kids get bigger they still love those simple canvases and the latest one in our house is the dirt pile of dirt taken out of the gardens and piled up for the boys to play with. They spend hours making roads, moving dirt from job site to job site, and generally covering themselves in a film of dust and creativity. They use their trucks at times, scrap pieces of wood, or just small shovels telling different stories each time. There are all sorts of great toys out there on the market but not all play things need a price tag on them. May I suggest a good pile of dirt in the back yard for hours of messy fun.

Another cheap toy that is worth hours of fun is the plastic containers in the kitchen. That is the one that helped me cook and clean in the kitchen. Also the pots, pans and wooden spoon drum set!

The pile of dirt we had in our back yard for the longest time was Lukas’ favorite toy. He misses that dirt.
