This is a concern for me – as an engineer and a father of two daughters. Math and science are critical building blocks to getting along in life. Look at how much attention the MPH girl on YouTube has gotten (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qhm7-LEBznk). I N-E-V-E-R want to see my daughters in that kind of situation.

My aunt, who is a math major from Boston College, and I have been having this discussion. Her hypothesis is along these lines:

*** Elementary school teachers are TERRIFIED of math! Most kids have parents who don’t know much math and then their first teachers don’t know much math. The window of opportunity is quickly closing. They finally get to junior high and high school and have teachers who majored in math but by then, the kids don’t have a good foundation and aren’t interested in something that’s “hard”. ***

What do we do about it? I’m not sure – but making sure elementary school teachers are not afraid of math is probably a good start!
