Sad boy is very sad indeed
Today we had a standoff at the home front. While Primo was at school, segundo and I were spending the morning hanging around the house getting some chores done. I was cleaning while he was trying to undo everything I had put away. We were about to head to the library before needing to pick Primo up at noon but Segundo had decided he was changing his clothes. I asked him to put his pants and long sleeve shirt back on since it was a chilly fall day, but he wanted to put some shorts and a t-shirt on. I told him we would head out to the library as soon as he puts his clothes back on. 45 minutes later he stopped crying long enough to get dressed and get in the car to pick up Primo. When we got in the car I snapped this picture of sad boy.

A night at the prom
Last weekend Beautiful and I left the kids with their grandparents and got all gussied up to raise money for Primo’s pre-school. There was a silent auction with six or seven tables of donated swag and a table of wine in a paper bags that you could gamble on. The theme of the night was “The Prom” and wanting to do it justice we headed all over town looking for just the right outfits. Goofy as the whole thing was we had a great time getting dressed up. Beautiful did her hair up big and my ruffled blue shirt and chuck taylor’s topped it all off. It was pretty great getting to interact with folks that we see for a couple minutes a week as we all drop off our kids. We got to talk about more than just our kids and their development, comparing terrible parenting stories and getting to know the person behind the parents. We got our pictures taken in classic awkward prom posses and even went out with some folks for a little after party festivities. We were up later than any of us had been in years and Beautiful and I were lucky enough to have no kids to wake up with the next day.

The Santa Snack
On Christmas Eve while getting ready for bed we asked Primo what he wanted to leave for Santa as a snack. He thought about it for a while, gave us that raised eyebrow wide eyed look of his that means ‘hold on to your hats folks, i’m about to blow your mind’ and then ran to the fridge. He came back with Popsicle, some carrots, and a stick of celery. He said that since Santa was from the North Pole he likes cold things and would like to have a popsicle, and a red one at that since his suit was red. For the Reindeer he had carrots but Rudolph got a celery stick because he was special, and he didn’t have to share it because the other reindeer had been so mean to him. We had just finished watching the stop motion classic Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. He said he needed a bowl of ice so that the popsicle wouldn’t melt before Santa got there and put together the plate you see above. He was pretty proud of himself and was sure that Santa would love it too. Then next morning there were two red sticks in a melted bowl of water and bite marks in all the veggies, he nodded his head at us and said “Santa Loved it!”

The Revolutionary and the Newsie
The weather has turned cold here in Portland but to keep some semblance of sanity we need to get outside for some rosy cheek playtime. Before heading out we make sure to have warm puffy jackets and toques to keep the ears warm. Yesterday while getting ready the boys were doing their usual finicky search for just the right hat and I left them at the hat drawer to get myself ready. Both boys need to examine each hat considering a cocktail of information (warmth, fit, matching their outfit, and overall craziness) before settling on just the right one and they were taking more time than usual. Once they finally decided they came around the corner looking like they do in the picture above and they couldn’t have been more proud of their choices. The each had one of Beautiful’s berets and after a quick picture they went out and faced the cold.
It is interesting seeing the boys have more and more to say about what they are wearing and why. Primo always wants to wear a tie dye shirt if he can, or a sleeveless. Not sure if it’s the inherent rural, read white trash, leanings of my side of the family, or some sort of hipster fashion statement sense from his Anthropologie working mom. Either way he has clear ideas of how he wants to look and I am happy to let him express himself. Segundo tends toward the comfortable and would rather stay in his jammies all day. That is a fashion statement I can resonate with and I am known to wear basketball shorts and sweater for whatever tasks the day calls for. There are times when the kids need to look a certain way but for the most part letting them create their outfits gives them control and a creative outlet. When I think about it, that is the kind of kids I want to raise, creative confident kids.
